APASA Spotlight: Stacy Uhm
Why did you apply to APASA?
As a freshman, I applied to APASA because it seemed like an organization that was genuine and truly cared for not only the org's but also the students within the organization. This mattered to me a lot as a freshman because I came from a school with clubs and organizations where passion was rare :’(. Additionally, I knew that my cultural identity was a big part of me, which is why I sought out a group that advocated for cultural awareness! I’m so grateful for freshman Stacy for applying! APASA was so much more than I have expected or imagined it to be.
Favorite APASA memory so far:
My intern class spontaneously played this fun snowball game after Cultural Art Expo using the leftover ice we had, and WE TRULY BONDED AWWW OUR CLASS IS SO CUTE.
A significant cultural milestone for you:
I don’t know if this is the most significant in my life, but the most memorable cultural milestone definitely has to be when Gangnam Style became really popular AHAHA. It was just so strange to see everyone sing and dance in Korean—something I never thought would happen.
What does being APA mean to you?
APA is the format I use to write up my psych paper…LOOL sorry my jokes are lame pls don’t hate me. Anyways, APA means duality. By being APA, I think I always felt pressured to choose to be either Asian or American. However, I’ve learned that you can be both or be anywhere within the spectrum. Ultimately, there is no one superior culture, and l live out the two cultures everyday. I think this duality is a separate culture/entity in itself, which is pretty cooool~ so I’m grateful :)
If you could plan any event at USC, what would it be?
An event where the whole campus turns into Asia. The whole campus would be rented out so that each building/area represents an Asian country. ALSO THERE WOULD BE BOMB FOOD. So essentially Night Market on steroids HEH. Oooo also if there can be fireworks that would be nice too xD
What is your long-term goal for APASA?
To facilitate intentional gatherings, meetings, and events so that APASA isn’t just another acronym but a community! (Personal long term goal: to eat as much as free food I can at next year’s events)
Thank you Stacy!
