APASA Spotlight: Kimberle Sotelo
Why did you apply to APASA?
I love planning events and seeing all the behind the scenes that goes into them, so I thought APASA would be an awesome fit for me! I love seeing our hard work pay off when other people can enjoy what we’ve planned.
Favorite APASA memory so far:
My fav APASA memory so far has to be our first outing together to Santa Monica where I got to meet all the interns and e-boarders for the first time. The wholesome energy and welcoming atmosphere just really made me happy and glad that I get to a part of such an awesome org.
A significant cultural milestone for you:
When Disney released the Pixar short Bao because I think it was such a powerful short that had a deep connection to Asian Americans. It was also amazing to see how so many people outside of the APA community were touched by it and could relate to it personally.
What does being APA mean to you?
Being APA has always been an identity that I’ve struggled with as a mixed-race kid. I’ve struggled with the idea of feeling like either I was too Asian or not Asian enough. But being able to immerse myself in a more diverse and welcoming environment in college, being APA has become an avenue or pride and self-love.
If you could plan any event at USC, what would it be?
I would plan a big concert where we’d have all the coolest Asian and APA artists perform at USC. 88 Rising?? Of course. Our K-pop kings and queens?? Bet. Heck even throw in our beloved TNT boys?? Perfection 😪
What is your long-term goal for APASA?
My long term goal for APASA is to continue to foster an open and welcoming environment for the APA community on campus and to make sure that students know we are here for them!!
Thank you Kimberle!
