APASA Spotlight: Minyoung Kim
Why did you apply to APASA?
I never thought I could use my ethnicity and/or identity could positively impact the community until I found out about APASA. I was immediately drawn by its effort to spread cultural awareness of APA to our community; I knew joining APASA will not only allow me to serve the community at a greater scale, but also help me blossom as a servant leader in the APA community.
Favorite APASA memory so far:
Coffee chat with the directors! It's a casual gathering of APASA leaders, where we chat about APA issues and concerns over yummy snacks and drinks. I love hearing about other's stories and experiences as a member of APA community in the United States and sharing my own stories. It has provided such a safe space, even if we disagree with one another, we understand and respect our differences. Please host more!
A significant cultural milestone for you:
The widespread popularity of BTS has significantly influenced cultural awareness of the Korean culture through their music. It's crazy how much Korean culture, language, food, and music has gained popularity within the past few years from their work as artists.
What does being APA mean to you?
Being APA means holding responsibilities to spread my culture and being respectful towards other cultures. Not only is it important for me to be aware of the issues within Korean community, but also vital for me to understand and respect other's cultures.
If you could plan any event at USC, what would it be?
APA Music Festival: Invite all APA musicians from around the world to host the biggest APA music festival to celebrate APA community through music!
What is your long-term goal for APASA?
I hope that APASA becomes such a renowned and well-represented assembly (It already is but even more!!) that everyone on campus knows about APASA for its positive impact on campus and community!
Thank you Minyoung!
